The disentangling of the true person from a defensive style of relating is the thrilling work of Christian growth. Nothing can be done to take away the heartache or failed relationships of the past, but our hope is that in Christ the past need not stain the present nor shape the future. A perspective on the damage of the past abuse, both internal and external, sets the stage for an understanding of how relationship with God is central in the change process.
